ANCIENT AEROPLANES

POST WORLD WAR II AEROPLANES

REPUBLIC F-84E THUNDERJET

The Republic F-84 Thunderjet first flew on February 26, 1946 and these photos show some of the 4,450 or so F-84E models that were produced from 1947 to 1953. The Thunderjet, which had a maximun speed of 695 mph (1,118 k/h),(1) was the first United States Air Force jet capable of carrying a tactical nuclear weapon and they fought in the Korean War. This aircraft was improved upon with the F-84F model, which had a swept-back rather than a straight wing. This photo and the next two photos show Thunderjets serving with the 8th Bomb Squadron of the 49th Fighter Bomber Wing.

A 1954 Christmas photo card featuring a F-84 Thunderjet from the 166th Fighter-Bomber Squadron of the Ohio Air National Guard.
