Climbers on the summit of Mount Whitney (14,494 feet or 4,418 meters)
on July 17, 1948, at 5:35 a.m. Mount Whitney, in the Sierra Nevada mountain
range, is the tallest mountain in the continental United States and requires
a permit to climb. It was first climbed in 1873 and the summit can be reached
by an eight and one-half mile trail, which requires an ice axe and crampons
in the spring and early-summer, or by technical routes. The climber sitting
down, in this photo, may be feeling the effects of the high altitude. The
highest mountain in the United States and North America is Mount McKinley
(20,320 feet or 6,194 meters), in Alaska.
