ANCIENT SEAPLANES

BURGESS-WRIGHT HYDROAEROPLANE

The Burgess-Wright Hydroaeroplane was a Wright Model B biplane with pontoons that was manufactured by Burgess under license. This and the next two photos were taken in the Philippines, around 1913, and may show aircraft from the United States Signal Corps Philippine Air School. The Burgess company later became part of the Curtiss company.

This photo might show either Lieutenant Herbert Dargue or Corporal Vernon Burge from the U.S. Signal Corps Philippine Air School.

CURTISS A-1 HYDROAEROPLANE

The two-seat Curtiss A-1 hydroplane was completed and delivered to the United States Navy in June 1911. It had a 75 horsepower Curtiss piston engine and a maximum speed of 65 mph (104.607 km/h). In 1914, the United States Navy redesignated it the Curtiss AH-1 Triad and it was taken out of service on October 16, 1914, after about 60 flights, during which it logged 285 hours of flight time.
